Plastic bridges were discontinued in 1966 and replaced with a traditional Gibson-style "belly-up" bridge, retaining an adjustable saddle, now made of rosewood. Initially introduced with a rectangular bridge, the rosewood bridge was replaced by an injection-molded plastic bridge with an adjustable ceramic saddle in 1962. Like other Kalamazoo-made flattop acoustic guitars from both Gibson and Epiphone, the Cortez's bridge was changed several times. In 1962, the "hourglass" headstock was introduced, eventually being used on most other Epiphone guitars. In the early 1960s, with brass badge supplies running low, the Epiphone logo was silkscreened on the headstock. Upon introduction, it featured the "Kalamazoo" headstock inherited from Philadelphia-produced necks acquired by Gibson, branded with a brass "bikini" badge originally intended for upright bass tailpieces. Like other Kalamazoo-era Epiphone guitar, it saw several minor redesigns during its production. It featured mahogany back and sides with a spruce top. Model FT-45N, indicating a natural finish, was equivalent to the Gibson LG-3 or Gibson B-25N. It was equivalent to the Gibson LG-2 until late 1962, when that model was replaced by the Gibson B-25 with some specification changes.
